Learner information and assessment

Read the information for the course being booked, including its delivery format, entry requirements, assessment arrangements, award or certificate and fee. The requirements of the particular course and awarding body apply.

Before the course

Check the course dates, attendance requirements and any materials or preparation requested. Ask Phoenix STS about anything that is unclear before booking. A general training page does not replace the instructions issued for a particular programme.

If support or an adjustment may be needed, raise this early. Explain the practical support required and identify the course. Detailed medical records are not needed for an initial enquiry. Relevant evidence and a suitable return method can be discussed separately.

Assessment instructions

Where assessment is required, learners should receive instructions covering the assessment method, deadline, criteria and evidence to be supplied. Follow the brief issued for the course. Ask for clarification where a requirement, deadline or return route is unclear.

An acknowledgement that an assignment brief has been received is separate from any declaration about the originality of completed work. Use only the declaration applicable to the actual assignment.

Fair assessment

Our assessment principles are validity, reliability, fairness, transparency and quality. Assessment must measure the intended learning outcomes, use appropriate evidence and apply the stated criteria consistently. Where a course has external assessment or awarding-body requirements, those requirements also apply.

Before assessment, we must explain the method, criteria, evidence required and relevant deadlines. Assessment decisions must be based on the evidence presented against the stated criteria. Learners must receive appropriate feedback and a clear explanation of the result.

We consider reasonable accommodation individually under our disability and accessibility policy and Equal Treatment Policy. Agreed adjustments support fair participation while preserving essential learning outcomes, assessment standards and safety.

Assessment records must support the decision and be handled securely. Any internal verification, external authentication or results approval required for the course must be completed before final results or certification are issued.

A learner can challenge an assessment decision through the assessment appeals procedure. Concerns about delivery, conduct or the wider service follow the complaints procedure. Recognition of prior learning is considered through the prior learning procedure and the requirements of the particular course.

Support and changes in circumstances

Tell Phoenix STS if circumstances may affect attendance or assessment. Identify the course, assessment and relevant dates, explain the effect on participation, and state the support or change being requested. Submitting a request does not itself approve an adjustment, deferral, extra sitting or award.

Course and awarding-body requirements determine what adjustments or changes are available. Check the applicable deadlines, pass requirements, attempts and any additional fees in the course instructions.

Results and certification

Assessment and certification arrangements depend on the course. Where internal verification, external authentication or results approval is required, those steps must be completed before final results or certification are issued. An attendance record or provisional mark is not a final award.
