Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning, usually called RPL, considers relevant learning or experience against the outcomes or requirements of a particular course. Availability depends on the programme and awarding-body requirements. It is not an automatic exemption or award.

Ask whether RPL is available

Contact info@phoenixsts.ie before assuming that a course, assessment or attendance requirement can be waived. Identify the programme and the requirement for which recognition is sought.

Initial information

  • Name and contact email.
  • The course or programme being considered.
  • The learning or experience for which recognition is requested.
  • A short description of relevant qualifications, training, experience or work evidence.
  • The recognition or outcome being sought.

Evidence must be authentic, relevant and sufficient for the particular outcome or standard. The initial enquiry can describe the evidence available; it does not require a full portfolio or copies of confidential client material.

Assessment of the request

The Programme Lead evaluates the evidence against the relevant outcome or standard. Internal verification applies where required. The decision should record the evidence considered, reasons, conditions and communication to the applicant.

RPL cannot bypass mandatory safety, assessment, certification or awarding-body requirements. A request does not guarantee acceptance, entry, exemption, a reduced fee or an award. Any applicable arrangements, evidence requirements and fees should be confirmed before proceeding.

Questions about a decision

Ask Phoenix STS for clarification of the decision or the applicable review or appeal route. See the privacy policy before supplying personal information.

Optional online request

Use the Learner and Customer Requests form and choose Recognition of prior learning. Submissions go to info@phoenixsts.ie. Give a short initial summary and arrange sensitive evidence separately. Email remains available; using the form is optional.
