Positive Handling in Schools
Course Overview
Positive handling refers to the range of strategies and techniques used by staff in schools and educational settings to manage challenging behaviour safely and effectively, while maintaining the dignity and wellbeing of all involved. It is a last resort intervention that should only be used when there is a risk of harm to the child, other pupils, staff, or property.
This CPD-accredited online course equips school staff with the knowledge and understanding of positive handling principles, the legal framework governing the use of reasonable force, and the importance of de-escalation techniques. Learners will gain confidence in knowing when and how physical intervention may be appropriate, and how to document and report incidents correctly.

About This Course
Managing challenging behaviour in schools requires a balanced approach that prioritises prevention and de-escalation while acknowledging that physical intervention may sometimes be necessary to keep people safe. This course provides a thorough understanding of the positive handling framework, ensuring that staff are aware of their rights, responsibilities, and the legal boundaries within which they must operate.
The course covers proactive strategies for preventing challenging behaviour, including the creation of calm and structured learning environments, the use of positive reinforcement, and the importance of building strong relationships with pupils. Learners will also explore the stages of behavioural escalation and learn how to use verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques effectively.
Where physical intervention becomes necessary, the course explains the legal requirements for using reasonable force, the principles of proportionality, and the duty to record and report all incidents. Learners will understand the importance of post-incident support for both staff and pupils, and how schools should review and learn from each incident to improve their practice.
