Course Overview

The Noise Awareness Online Course provides essential training on the risks associated with occupational noise exposure and the measures required to protect hearing in the workplace. This CPD-accredited course is designed for employees and employers who need to understand their legal obligations under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, Part 5: Control of Noise at Work.

Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common occupational diseases in Ireland, yet it is entirely preventable with proper awareness and controls. This course covers the science of sound, how noise damages hearing, legal exposure limits, noise risk assessments, and the selection and use of hearing protection equipment.

The course is fully online and can be completed at your own pace from any device. Upon passing with a minimum score of 70%, a CPD-accredited certificate is issued immediately.

About This Course

The Noise Awareness Online Course has been developed to give workers and managers a clear understanding of the dangers posed by excessive noise in the workplace. Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can cause permanent, irreversible hearing damage, including noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, employers are required to assess noise risks and implement appropriate control measures.

The course explains how sound is measured in decibels, the difference between lower and upper exposure action values, and when hearing protection becomes mandatory. Learners will discover the hierarchy of noise control measures — from elimination and engineering controls through to administrative controls and personal protective equipment.

Practical guidance is provided on selecting the correct type of hearing protection for different environments, maintaining hearing protection equipment, and understanding health surveillance requirements. The course also covers employers' duties to provide information, instruction, and training to employees who are exposed to noise at or above the lower exposure action values.
