Course Overview

Asbestos remains one of the greatest occupational health hazards in Ireland and worldwide. Despite being banned, asbestos-containing materials are still present in many older buildings constructed before the year 2000. This CPD-accredited course provides essential awareness training on the dangers of asbestos and the precautions needed to work safely in environments where it may be present.

The course covers the types of asbestos, where it is commonly found, the health risks associated with exposure, and the legal requirements under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Exposure to Asbestos) Regulations 2006–2010.

About This Course

Asbestos was widely used in construction materials throughout the 20th century due to its fire-resistant and insulating properties. However, when asbestos fibres become airborne and are inhaled, they can cause serious and often fatal diseases including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer. These diseases can take decades to develop, making early awareness and prevention critical.

This course teaches learners to identify the most common types of asbestos-containing materials, understand when asbestos poses a risk, and know what actions to take if they suspect asbestos is present. It emphasises the importance of never disturbing suspected asbestos materials and the requirement to engage licensed contractors for removal.

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Exposure to Asbestos) Regulations 2006–2010, employers must ensure that all workers who may encounter asbestos during their work receive appropriate awareness training.

This course is suitable for anyone who may come into contact with asbestos-containing materials during their work, including construction workers, maintenance staff, facility managers, electricians, plumbers, and building surveyors.
