Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome
CPD-Accredited Online Training — 30 Minutes — €35.00
Course Overview
The Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) course provides essential training on the risks associated with regular use of vibrating tools and equipment. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, Part 5, Chapter 2, employers must assess the risk of vibration exposure and take appropriate measures to protect their workers. This CPD-accredited programme explains the causes, symptoms, and prevention of HAVS.
HAVS is a painful and debilitating condition caused by prolonged exposure to vibration from handheld power tools such as drills, grinders, chainsaws, and pneumatic hammers. Once the damage is done, it is irreversible, making early awareness and prevention absolutely critical for workers in at-risk occupations.

About This Course
Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome affects the blood vessels, nerves, muscles, and joints of the hand, wrist, and arm. Symptoms include tingling and numbness in the fingers, reduced grip strength, and blanching of the fingers in cold conditions (often referred to as vibration white finger). In severe cases, workers may lose the ability to perform fine manual tasks, with serious implications for their livelihood and quality of life.
This course explains the science behind vibration-related injury, the exposure action values and exposure limit values set out in the regulations, and the practical control measures that employers and employees can implement to reduce risk. These include limiting exposure time, using low-vibration tools, maintaining equipment properly, and implementing health surveillance programmes for at-risk workers.
The programme also covers the early warning signs of HAVS and the importance of reporting symptoms promptly. Early detection and intervention can slow the progression of the condition and prevent further damage, making awareness training an essential part of any organisation's occupational health strategy.
