Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)

Course Overview

Many workplaces use substances that can be hazardous to health, from cleaning chemicals and adhesives to dust, fumes, and biological agents. This CPD-accredited course provides essential training on identifying hazardous substances, assessing the risks they pose, and implementing appropriate control measures.

The course covers employer and employee duties under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Chemical Agents) Regulations 2001–2021, including risk assessment, exposure monitoring, health surveillance, and the proper use of safety data sheets and chemical labelling under CLP Regulation.

About This Course

Exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace can cause a wide range of health effects, from skin irritation and respiratory problems to serious long-term conditions such as occupational asthma, dermatitis, and cancer. The Health and Safety Authority reports that chemical agents are a significant cause of occupational ill health in Ireland.

This course teaches learners how to identify hazardous substances in their workplace, read and interpret safety data sheets, carry out COSHH assessments, and select appropriate control measures including ventilation, substitution, and personal protective equipment. It also covers emergency procedures for chemical spills and exposures.
