Blood transfusion is a critical medical procedure that saves lives daily, but it also carries inherent risks if not managed correctly. This CPD-accredited course provides healthcare professionals with essential knowledge on the safe administration of blood and blood products, including patient identification, compatibility testing, monitoring for adverse reactions, and the legal and regulatory requirements governing transfusion practice.

The course covers the blood transfusion process from request to completion, including the chain of traceability requirements, recognition and management of transfusion reactions, and the importance of accurate documentation and reporting in line with the National Haemovigilance Office guidelines.

About This Course

Transfusion errors, whilst rare, can have devastating consequences for patients. The most common cause of serious adverse transfusion events is the administration of blood to the wrong patient. This course emphasises the critical importance of positive patient identification and the bedside check procedure.

Learners will understand the different blood components and their indications, the signs and symptoms of acute and delayed transfusion reactions, and the correct procedures for managing adverse events. The course also covers consent requirements, special transfusion situations, and the regulatory framework governing blood transfusion in Ireland.
