Irish Compliance Context

Employers have a legal duty to ensure employees understand workplace safety:

Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005

The 2005 Act requires employers to provide instruction, training, and supervision to keep employees safe and well. Section 10 requires training in a form, manner, and language that staff are likely to understand. In plain terms, safety training must actually make sense to the people receiving it.

Employee Duties

Section 13 of the 2005 Act places duties on employees too. Staff must take reasonable care of their own safety and the safety of others. They must cooperate with their employer on safety matters. They must also report any workplace defects that could put safety at risk.

General Application Regulations 2007

The General Application Regulations 2007 set out detailed rules on areas such as workplace design, manual handling, display screen equipment, and personal protective equipment. This course introduces each of these areas. In plain terms, the regulations turn the general duty into practical rules for everyday work.

Using Safety Awareness Training Properly

Awareness is the starting point

Safety awareness training gives employees a practical introduction to common workplace hazards, personal responsibilities, reporting routes and safe behaviour. It supports the employer's wider safety management system. It does not replace risk assessments, safety statements, task-specific training or supervision.

Make it relevant to the workplace

The course is strongest when examples are linked to the work people actually do. Offices, care settings, warehouses, schools and service businesses have different hazards. Staff need to understand the hazards they are likely to meet and who to tell when something is wrong. They also need to know which actions sit outside their role or training and should be left alone.

Good records matter

Employers should keep attendance records, course dates, refresher dates and any actions raised during the session. If staff identify repeated problems such as blocked walkways, poor housekeeping, missing reporting routes or unclear procedures, those issues should be recorded and followed up after training.

Limits of the course

This is not a manager competence course, manual handling practical course or risk assessor course. It builds baseline awareness so staff can take sensible day-to-day action and raise issues early.

After the Course

After safety awareness training, managers should check whether staff know the practical reporting route and whether recurring issues raised during the session have been followed up. The course should lead to simple improvements. Examples include clearer housekeeping expectations, better defect reporting, safer movement around the workplace, and more confidence to stop and ask before a task becomes unsafe. That follow-up is what turns awareness into useful day-to-day behaviour.

Induction and role changes

For new starters, temporary staff and staff moving into different work areas, the course can also support induction. It gives people a clear baseline before they receive any task-specific training, site rules or supervision. That distinction matters. Awareness helps people recognise and report issues. Task-specific instruction tells them exactly how a particular job must be done safely. The course also gives supervisors a useful check that basic site rules are understood before role-specific training begins. It keeps the basic safety message consistent across teams and work areas.
