People Moving & Handling Course Ireland - Healthcare worker assisting elderly resident with safe transfer from bed to wheelchair in nursing home setting

Course Overview

Comprehensive 1-day practical training for healthcare staff covering safe patient and resident handling techniques. This People Moving and Handling Course incorporates the TILEO risk assessment framework and ensures compliance with HSA, HSE, and HIQA patient/resident moving requirements. Learners will understand how to utilise equipment through practical demonstration. The course combines theory and hands-on practice with profiling beds, hoists, sliding sheets, and wheelchairs. On-site delivery across Ireland or at public courses in our Longford training centre. The first option should always be to remove or reduce the need for manual handling. Just providing training alone will not reduce injury rates — training needs to be supported by organisational solutions, risk assessment, and appropriate equipment.

Equipment Required On-Site

For on-site delivery, your facility must provide: a profiling bed (or hospital bed), a wheelchair, a hoist, and sliding sheets. For public courses at our Longford training centre, all equipment is provided.

What You’ll Learn

The course covers five core areas across theory and extensive practical training.

TILEO Risk Assessment Framework

The TILEO framework for assessing manual handling risks before any people moving task: Task (what does it involve?), Individual (who is doing the handling?), Load (who is being moved?), Environment (where is it taking place?), Other (any other relevant factors?).

Eight Principles of Safe Moving and Lifting

Think before handling. Adopt a stable position. Get a good hold. Start in a good posture. Keep the load close. Avoid twisting the back. Move smoothly. Know your limits.

Bed-Based Techniques

Safe working height of beds, logrolling technique, sitting patients up in bed (3 techniques), moving patients up the bed using sliding sheets, and sitting patients to the edge of the bed.

Transfer Techniques

Sit to stand and stand to sit. Transfer from bed to chair using various methods. Use of banana board and other transfer aids. The falling patient/resident — control techniques to manage safely.

Equipment Use

Practical demonstration and hands-on practice with hoists, sliding sheets, profiling beds, and transfer aids. Understanding when mechanical aids should be used and how to operate them safely.

Legal Requirements

Employers have clear legal obligations regarding manual handling of people in healthcare settings:

Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005

The 2005 Act requires employers to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement measures to protect employees. This includes managing the risks associated with patient and resident handling in healthcare settings.

General Application Regulations 2007 — Chapter 4

The General Application Regulations 2007 (Chapter 4: Manual Handling of Loads) require employers to avoid or reduce the need for manual handling, assess unavoidable tasks, and provide appropriate training. Regulation 69(c) specifically requires risk assessment on all manual handling activities.

HIQA Requirements

For nursing homes and residential care facilities, HIQA requires that staff are trained in safe patient and resident handling techniques. This training supports compliance with HIQA standards for the care and welfare of residents in designated centres.

HSA Guidance

The HSA provides specific guidance on manual handling in healthcare, emphasising that generic training is not sufficient — training must be task-specific and reflect the actual handling activities staff perform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Content last reviewed: March 2026. This page is regularly updated to reflect changes in Irish legislation and HIQA requirements.

Yes. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007 require employers to provide appropriate training for employees engaged in manual handling activities that pose a risk of injury. This includes people moving tasks in healthcare settings.

TILEO is a framework for assessing manual handling risks. It stands for Task, Individual, Load, Environment, and Other factors. Before any people moving task, staff should assess these five elements to identify risks and determine the safest approach.

Certification is valid for 2 years. Refresher training is required every 2 years to maintain certification and ensure continued competency. More frequent refresher training may be appropriate if there are changes in equipment, procedures, or if issues are identified.

The People Moving & Handling Course is predominantly skill-based, requiring hands-on practice with equipment and techniques. Limiting the class to 10 learners ensures everyone has adequate time for practice and demonstration during the practical modules.

Your facility needs to provide a bed or profiling bed, wheelchair, hoist, and sliding sheets for the practical training. This ensures staff train on equipment similar to what they will use in their daily work.

Yes. A valid People Moving & Handling certification is a prerequisite for the Evacuation Equipment Training Course . Staff must understand correct posture, lifting techniques, and body mechanics before operating evacuation aids.

Yes. The manual handling theory section can be delivered through blended learning , combining online theory with face-to-face practical training. This can reduce on-site training time while maintaining comprehensive coverage.

The eight principles are: (1) Think before handling, (2) Adopt a stable position, (3) Get a good hold, (4) Start in a good posture, (5) Keep the load close, (6) Avoid twisting the back, (7) Move smoothly, and (8) Know your limits. These principles form the foundation of safe people moving practice.

The course covers logrolling, sitting patients up in bed (3 techniques), moving patients up the bed using sliding sheets, sitting patients to the edge of bed, sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit transfers, bed-to-chair transfers using various methods, falling patient control techniques, and hoist demonstration.

If you have any medical condition that may be relevant to the training, particularly the practical work, please inform the instructor. This allows adjustments to be made to ensure your safety during the hands-on components of the course.
