Course Aims

• Preserve life through immediate and appropriate emergency response

• Prevent illness or injury from becoming worse through correct first aid treatment

• Protect the unconscious through proper airway management and positioning

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Confidently deal with an emergency first aid situation in the workplace

• Administer appropriate first aid treatment for injuries and illnesses

• Perform CPR and use an AED on adults

• Respond to opioid-associated life-threatening emergencies

• Know what to do and what not to do in an emergency situation

• Recognise and respond to medical emergencies including heart attack, stroke, and breathing difficulties

• Control bleeding and treat shock using correct techniques

• Manage environmental emergencies including heat and cold-related conditions

Course Programme

The First Aid & Heartsaver AED Course covers a comprehensive range of first aid topics plus CPR and AED training over 6 hours:

First Aid Basics

• First aid principles and priorities

• Scene safety and assessment

• Calling emergency services (112/999)

• Preventing illness and injury from worsening

• Disease transmission prevention

Medical Emergencies

• Heart attack recognition and response

• Stroke recognition (FAST method)

• Breathing difficulties and asthma

• Diabetic emergencies

• Seizures, fainting, and allergic reactions

Injury Emergencies

• Bleeding control and bandaging techniques

• Shock recognition and treatment

• Burns and electrical injuries

• Broken bones, sprains, and dislocations

• Head, neck, and spine injuries

Environmental Emergencies

• Heat-related emergencies (heat exhaustion, heat stroke)

• Cold-related emergencies (hypothermia, frostbite)

• Poisoning and substance exposure

• Bites and stings

• Drowning and near-drowning

CPR and AED

• Adult CPR technique (hands-on manikin practice)

• AED (defibrillator) use with ZOLL AED 3 trainer

• Adult choking management

• Opioid-associated life-threatening emergencies

Pre-Course Requirements

• English language proficiency: Fluency in English is required (training is delivered in English)

• Physical capability: Learners should be physically fit enough to carry out chest compressions on a manikin while kneeling

• Medical conditions: Please inform us of any specific learner requirements or medical conditions before attending

• Practical assessment: You will be required to complete all practical elements to receive your certificate

Certification and Instructors

Your Certification

Upon successful completion, you receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED certificate. This certification is internationally recognised and delivered through an Irish Heart Foundation affiliated training site.

Certificate validity: 2 years. You should complete a refresher course before your certificate expires to maintain your current certification. Many employers require staff to hold valid first aid qualifications under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.

Our Instructors

All Phoenix STS first aid instructors hold a QQI Level 6 Train the Trainer qualification or higher and are experienced first aid, CPR, and AED practitioners. We train with the ZOLL AED 3 trainer to provide the most realistic AED training experience available.

Our instructors maintain current certifications with the American Heart Association and the Irish Heart Foundation, and complete regular continuing professional development to ensure course content reflects the latest resuscitation guidelines and first aid best practice.
