Our Safety Representative Training Course follows the course content recommended by the Health and Safety Authority. The course aims to give general guidance on the roles of Safety Representatives and employers and the employee’s responsibilities in the process of safety consultation and representation so that accidents and ill-health at work can be prevented. Employer and employee consultation on safety, health, and welfare concerns should occur in general and between the employer and the safety representative(s) designated by the employees.

Workers will be inspired to do more to ensure compliance if they see their organisation making success in promoting safety and health. Getting workers engaged in formulating and reviewing safe work practices is the best approach to get them to follow them. Workers are far more inclined to follow processes when implemented if they believe their thoughts are appreciated and considered. After all, workers are the ones who do the work, and they will know it better than anybody else.

What are the legal requirements?

The duty of the safety representative, in particular, is defined under Section 25 of the 2005 Act, which allows employees to pick and designate a representative from among their number at their place of employment to represent them at work in collaboration with their employer on matters relating to safety, health, and welfare. The Safety Representative Training Course is designed for safety representatives from various industries. It may be customised to your industry, allowing safety representatives to represent employees in those areas best.

The Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 provides consultation between employers and employees to help ensure cooperation to prevent accidents and ill-health in the workplace. Under section 25 of the Act, employees are entitled to select a safety representative to represent them on safety and health matters in consultations with their employer. Section 26 of the Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work Act of 2005 lays out the procedures for this consultation on various workplace safety and health issues. Section 27 of the Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work Act of 2005 protects safety advocates.

What else can you do as a safety representative after completing the Safety Representative Training Course? Accompany a Health and Safety Authority inspector (see Section 64 of the 2005 Act), other than the investigation of an accident or dangerous occurrence, although this may be allowed at the discretion of the inspectorBe present when the inspector requires it or when the employee in question seeks it where the inspector interviews the employee about an accident or dangerous occurrence at the workplaceMake suggestions to the employer on workplace safety, health, and welfare.Make oral or written representations to inspectors, including about accident or dangerous occurrence investigationsInspectors can provide the safety representative with advice and information about workplace safety, health, and welfareConsult and communicate with other safety representatives assigned to the same workplace, whether they work in the same location or at separate locations under the employer’s authority (for example, safety representatives on different shifts)

As the Safety Representatives Training Course is predominantly skill-based, it is limited to 12 learners; this allows adequate time for workshops
