How fire alarm systems work, what to do when an alarm sounds, your responsibilities as an employee, and the difference between discovering a fire and hearing an alarm. When to fight a fire and when to evacuate.
Fire Extinguisher Operation
Classes of fire (A, B, C, D, F, and electrical), which extinguisher type to use for each class, and hands-on practice operating extinguishers on a controlled training fire using the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
Evacuation Procedures
Your building’s escape routes and emergency exits, assembly point locations, roll call procedures, assisting colleagues with mobility difficulties, and the role of fire wardens during evacuation.

Legal Requirements
Fire safety training is a legal requirement for all Irish workplaces:
Fire Services Act 1981
The Fire Services Act 1981 requires persons having control of premises to take reasonable measures to guard against the outbreak of fire and to ensure the safety of persons on the premises in the event of fire.
Fire Services (Amendment) Act 2003
The 2003 Amendment strengthened duties on persons in control of premises, including requirements for fire safety management and staff training.
Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005
The 2005 Act requires employers to provide appropriate training to employees on fire safety, emergency procedures, and the use of fire-fighting equipment. Section 11 requires employers to prepare emergency plans.
HIQA Regulation 28 (Healthcare Facilities)
For nursing homes and residential care facilities, HIQA’s Fire Precautions regulation requires adequate fire safety training for all staff, regular fire drills, and documented evidence of training compliance.
