Course Overview

Care homes present unique fire safety challenges due to the vulnerability of their residents. This CPD-accredited course is specifically designed for fire marshals working in care home environments, covering the additional responsibilities and procedures required to ensure the safe evacuation of residents with reduced mobility, cognitive impairment, or other conditions that may affect their ability to self-evacuate.

The course covers progressive horizontal evacuation, compartmentation principles, personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs), the use of evacuation equipment, and the fire marshal’s role in maintaining fire safety standards in residential care settings.

About This Course

Fire safety in care homes requires a different approach to standard workplace fire safety. Residents may have limited mobility, sensory impairments, or cognitive conditions that affect their understanding of emergency procedures. Fire marshals in these settings must be trained to manage evacuations that prioritise the safety of the most vulnerable.

This course covers the principles of defend-in-place strategies, horizontal evacuation to adjacent fire compartments, night-time evacuation procedures, and coordinating with the fire service. It also addresses HIQA fire safety compliance requirements and the fire marshal’s role in regular fire drills and safety inspections.
