    Table of Contents

The Evacuation Aid Instructors Course is designed to enable an individual to deliver staff training utilising evacuation equipment safely and in a controlled manner. Phoenix STS is the only company within Ireland authorised to deliver a train-the-trainer course on the full range of “Ski” evacuation products; this includes Ski evacuation sheets, pads and mats. Management must actively monitor evacuation practice drills, evacuation aid training content, and staff attendance at training so that service providers take a proactive approach to ensuring everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency requiring an evacuation of service users/residents/patients.

There should be a clearly defined process to ensure that changes in the procedures are communicated to all staff and others working in the centre, and any additional training required. Service providers must ensure that all people working in the centre know the procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency and their individual specific roles as set out within these procedures.

Evacuation aids such as Ski Pads, Ski Sheets and evacuation chairs can all be used to safely move people with mobility impairments in emergency evacuation situations, depending on the user’s physical requirements. Anyone responsible for operating an evacuation aid must receive proper training to ensure they are competent in its use and can use the evacuation aid correctly and safely.

This course is broken down into three modules evacuation sheets, evacuation aids up to 160 kg, and evacuation aids over 160 kg. Learners can choose to complete all three modules or only the modules that are relevant to their environment.

The Evacuation Aid Instructors Course is conducted according to manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines, with a maximum of two learners per course. To be deemed competent to provide training on the use of “Ski” evacuation equipment, you must hold a current instructor certificate.

Our tutors must undergo extensive refresher training every three years to ensure they are certified to deliver training. Phoenix STS ensures that our tutors are current with manufacturer’s requirements and current medical training guidelines for evacuation sheets, pads and mats. Ensure that you meet your legal obligations and be kept up to date with new regulations in emergency escape procedures for all, including the mobility impaired, by being trained by our official recognised tutors.

Upon completing the chosen module, all learners will be able to safely use the evacuation aid according to their organisations moving and handling procedures to avoid the risk of manual handling injuries to both themselves and the person being evacuated.

A suitable location for practical activities within a healthcare environment is required to complete the Evacuation Aid Instructors Course, i.e. Nursing Home or Hospital (staff who assist learners will be certified as trained in the use of evacuation aids by Phoenix STS).
