This comprehensive course provides an overview of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA), explaining the term ‘capacity’ and who is affected by the legislation. Delegates learn about the statutory principles of the MCA and about good practice in supporting individuals to make decisions.

This course also covers the test for assessing capacity and who should be involved in the capacity assessment. The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) is also covered so delegates understand the meaning of the term ‘deprivation of liberty’, the difference between restriction, restraint and deprivation of liberty; the purpose of DOLS and how to make an application if an individual is being deprived of their liberty.
