The Allergen Awareness Course has been developed to be of interest to everyone who works in the food industry, organisations and businesses who operate in the food industry and even consumers who would like to learn more about food allergies and how to handle allergens safely.
It is a real challenge to eat safely when you live with a food allergy. The only way to manage the condition is simply to avoid all of the food that causes a reaction. Recent studies show that 5% of children and 3% of adults in Ireland and 1-2% of adults and 5-8% of children in the UK live with a food allergy and 1 in 100 people in Ireland and the UK have coeliac disease. Most worryingly, it is estimated that there are approximately 10 deaths per year as a result of food allergies.
